Things are heating up around the office this week, and not just the temps. I snapped this shot coming back from lunch. Looks like a prototype of the 2010 Teocali was on its way to do some test runs at the local trails.

Can't give away too much, and the spec is no where close to production, but see if you can guess the major frame changes. Hint: there are 5 that I know of...

Getting the bear out of the cave

Well it's been a looooong winter. Here in Madison our snow hit in December and is just now going away. I feel like a bear that's coming our of his cave (except they loose weight over the winter and all I do is eat). I've been kept up in the cave for such a long time that I'm getting a little edgy and I've let my hair grow longer than anytime since college days (long time). Normally I'm a number 2 on the good ole Wahl razor but I've just gone rogue this year.

But then a glimmer of hope came over the past week. First the snow is melting...there actually is dirt under all that stuff and I'm itching to hit it.

Next my new Division 26 Mongoose Tribe jersey shows up and Dale (THE man at Div 26) had my name put on the back of mine....OK feeling even better about riding. Thanks Dale!!

Finally the big one hit, the coup de grâce, the mother-lode.... Manitou Dorado wunder fork meets my trusty Boot'R test sled. We've had testers out on these over the past few weeks but I had never laid my greasy mitts on one because they are super rare. Rich and Len over in Hayes Bicycle Group land finally were able to get one out (stoked guys). So I'm off to my freeride play area and hope there is enough rock exposed for a couple of runs. Might even have to go get my hair cut now.

Post Cam Jam

The past few weeks have been pretty hectic. The jumps held up great after the jam and I was stoked that it wouldn't take much work to get them back to running dialed. That was until we had the biggest storm in about 8 years. I got a txt MSG from Hess and all it said was 'there goes ya jumps'. The following day I went out to check it out and was blown away by the damage. 3 of the take off have eroded and partially collapsed as well as 3 of the landings and all the run-ups and in between the jumps is pretty much non-existent. I was so bummed to see the state of them and I now have hours and hours of digging ahead of me.

Apart from the jumps being trashed, I have spent a lot of time in the foam pit, well more like dust pit as my foam pit has been weathered for a few years. Besides breathing in all the rotted foam particles and getting it in your eyes, it still serves the purpose that it is made to do. I have a couple new tricks dialed in there and am working on some new bangers for the up and coming season.

After we counted up all the dollars raised at the jam, over 13 grand, I took the check into the Canberra hospital and met with some of the kids in the pediatric ward. I handed out some posters and stickers and also got pushed around on a dope chopper by one of the kids. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad that all the coin we raises is going to a great cause. Thanks to everyone for their donations!

Tim Fountain and I went out to our friend Bruce's house to work on his sons, Scotty and Locky's jumps and to have a ride. They have a sweet set up with 4 jumps in a row going down a slight hill and turning to the left. The last set is pretty big and a nice floater. I just got word that Scotty broke his leg on the last set the other day, get better soon mate.

As for this up and coming week, well I'm currently on a plane flying to Perth. It's non stop for me this month, in between learning new tricks in the foam, digging jumps, camping and fishing, who knows what the next week will bring!!!??? Stay tuned for updates from Perth!! Snow Race in Lac Blanc Bike Park

If anyone makes their way to France, be sure to go visit the Lac Blanc Bike Park http://www.lacblanc-bikepark.com/. If you go, you can rent one of the flock of 55 Mongeese bikes they have available. It is the 3rd largest bike park in France, selling over 13,000 passes in 2009 alone!

One fun thing about Lac Blanc is that they host events year round. Last weekend was a snow race, thie first event that Mongoose was able to sponsor.

Riders did a 2 min. DH run for qualifying times and then duked it out 4x style.

Over 125 riders from France, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany competed for the win.

CamJam Recap - From the Horse's Mouth

Got this recap from Cam from his annual Jam held last weekend. Check out the news section of Mongoose.com for a highlight video as well!

So after a few weeks of massive days on the shovel, patching jumps, setting up fences and lights and all the rest of it that goes with an event, to have it bucket down rain on Friday it wasn't looking good that we were going to be able to have the jam.

I was up at 5:30am in the rain tarping up the jumps and digging drainage. It was a horrible lead up to an event we had all put so much time and effort into. Come Saturday morning I woke up to birds singing light clouds and no wind. I couldn't believe that the rain had cleared and there might be a slight chance that we could actually ride the jumps and pull off the jam. I high tailed it out to the jumps to check out the state of them. To my surprise there was no mud, no sogginess, the jumps are in great condition. I didn't wanna say it just in case I jinxed it but if we were able to get the day with no rain and wind it would of been so amazing.

Well come 3pm Saturday arvo the boys were riding the yard and having a ball. I was stoked watching peoples faces as they came down the hill hitting the monster sized jumps at the bottom. All I could see was grins from ear to ear. As the crowds started rolling in and and everything got underway we had a total of 1498ppl through the gate with a good 20-40 ppl watching outside the fence.

The jam went off, the riding was insane with Piano and Searlsy sending some seriously insane tricks on the big dog trick jump. nasty and Adam aloise were also in attendance. I was so pumped to have these guys riding the yard. The were both throwing out sweet 3's on the first couple of jumps and blasting flip taybo's on the last set. Everyone took a hard slam or two. Piano fell on his face and got a sweet black eye, this still didn't stop him from winning best trick with a front flip transfer off the 40footer over onto the new trick jump landing. Josh stead smashed his face twice, one time he hit his nose, the other time he spilt his forehead open on the handlebars, but again, he walked out with best style. If u have seen Josh ride then you would understand why he is such a bad ass. Dane Searls threw down some of the most amazing 360 tailwhip to taybo over the big dog it was nuts. He banged up his mouth and was bleeding but still won king of the hill. Re-claiming his 2008 title. During best trick he got so close to pulling a flip no foot can to tailwhip on the big dog it was nuts.

At the end of the night when everything finished everyone was so sore and beat we ended up chillied up at the house watching some of the guys and girls that didn't ride go toe to toe in boxing matches. I just want to thank all my sponsors and family and friends who helped out and make such an event possible. Next year will be bigger and better yet again and I look forward to it. Thanks heaps!

OK we wound down the week rather nicely and had a bit of celebration for completing another model year. Craig is relatively up to speed and has been fully Mongoose indoctrinated.

The Food:
Whenever we go to Taiwan you can bet that the factories are going to take good care of us. I swear every time I go to Taiwan I gain a half pound of weight per day. There is no such thing as a little lunch and one distinct disadvantage for me too is the food is delicious so I can’t say no.

Misc Bike Parts:
Well we told everyone about the new Salvo’s first ride on the last update. Since then the frame has passed a battery of tests with flying colors. Also of note is the slick thing you can do to modify the bearing (or should we say BEER-ing) cover.

Some part names don’t always translate well into English.

Mission Accomplished (and without an aircraft carrier or huge banner):
After our last day of visiting factories it was time to wind things down. Our last factory to visit (Forever Machine) is the crew that builds a few of our frames. They have an empty field across the street they look at everyday so Jack (the smiling guy in the middle) decided to plant wild flowers there just to make the scene a little nicer…made it all smell better too.

We wound down the week at a German restaurant with a French name (Le Ble Dor)…only in Taiwan. Craig passed the final exam into Mongoose ranks with a big “Ho Dala” (Taiwanese way of saying bottoms up). Thanks to Craig and Glen for an awesome week and thanks to all our factories and vendors for their support.

Taiwan Trip Update #2

Got another update from Darren today, Here goes...

Don’t you love that #2 is in the subject line…someday I have to grow up but not today.

OK on this round we got to get a little riding in today. Sunday is usually a down time…the factories need a break from us I’m sure. We cruised out to Da Do mountain in the Taichung area…Glen says that Da Do is roughly translated Big Belly. That seems fitting for me because I’ve always thought my belly keeps my center of gravity railing turns…you could think of it as an excellent place to stay centered when downhilling.

The local Taichung mountain bike crew has been really busy since the last time I rode out here. Usually it is only a place to hit trails (which pretty much go straight down and you climb straight back up) but there is a dirt jump zone that has popped up and it was pretty fun.

One of the best features amongst the many tables, berms and doubles was a tree jump double. It kind of played with your mind visually because you thought you would hit you head off the limbs above…fun stuff. I was on a GT Avalanche instead of a Mongoose (these guys might be trying to tell me something). Anyway, I jumped that GT over the tree gap…GT’s can jump…who’d a thunk it.

Craig threw down on the Meteore Comp and proved that those hardtails can rail downhill and climb like a goat too (just a little b.b.b.b.b.bumpy).

Glen had the most burly bike of the day rocking his Khyber Super…not sure he was digging the climbs as much as us hardtail weenies but he must have blasted the descents as he had the only flat despite rocking meaty 2.35” tires.

Sounds like the boys are holding their own on the island. Wish I was there with you, but I don't know if I have the fuzzies to take on the tree jump double!

Maybe I'll practice when at Ray's MTB at the end of the month!

The Dawn of a New Era

Our MTB Product Manager Darren is over in Taiwan for his last trip as Mongoose PM. As part of Mongoose's transition to the Bethel Center of Excellence, we have a new PM on board. He and Darren are over checking on the status of the 2011 line and having a bit of fun along the way.

Here's Glen, our guy on the ground in Taiwan looking for love in apparently the wrong place.

The Factory feels like Craig is going to work out. Craig and Darren were checking on the hand tensioning wheel station so that all of our high end FreeDrive bikes' wheels get pampered too. They do a very stringent double tension/detensioning process that builds up a very stout wheel. Looks like Darren got rejected.

Darren's first ride on the new 120mm Salvo trail bike. Hope to be bringing back the first samples of these and go someplace warm to test ride. The parking lot felt super smooth with this design.

What You Been Up to Cam?

We just got this update from Cam White. Looks like he's been living the good life! **NOTE** Mongoose does not condone driving and emailing!!!!!!

It's been a few weeks since my last update, and a whole of stuff has been going on!

I spent a week up at the central coast fishing! It was good to get away for some chill time and enjoy the outdoors. We caught a bunch of fish, Flathead, Bream! So good on the BBQ with some lemon and butter haha!

After our week up there I've just been at home digging as per usual. The yard is now up and running and little Chris and I have been sessioning every morning!

I forgot how big and fast the last 3 jumps were!! It's so much fun and I'm excited to see what goes down at the jam. I've also got dirt delivered to build a new lil somethingsomething but that's a secret and u will have to wait till the jam to see it lol...

Currently I am driving (don't do what I'm doing and email while u drive) down to Benalla to Cam Pianta's house for a demo were doing in Mulwala on the weekend. The Mulwala show is always a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to riding it this weekend.

That's all that's been going on but stay tuned for the final couple weeks leading up to the jam as it's gonna be epic!!

I just got this email from Cam White who's been a pretty busy guy...

Hey guys, been a couple of busy weeks, I have some info for the jam below as well as an update you guys can check up on the websites if you want!!

My Jam is going to be held on the 6th of February, as for a charity were not 100% sure yet, but on Friday this week I'm having a meeting with a fellow from the Canberra hospital about doing it for the children's ward there. If the guy is stoked on it and we decide to lock it in I will let you know asap.

Update: This past few weeks has been really busy. The other weekend we flew up to visit Unit to do some riding and photos etc, it was a flat out 2 days and we got a lot of fun stuff in like visiting the children's hospital, in particular this one fellow, Ben. He was a bike rider/skater from the Gold Coast. We went and hung out with him for a bit, gave him some posters and stickers and also a PSP with a couple of games. It was awesome meeting him and hanging out with him. After visiting Ben, wewent downstairs and hung out with some other kids in a games room playing Nintendo Wii and air hockey and foosball. It was a lot of fun.

Dane Searls and I were nominated by two girls to get smacked in the face with a cream pie... I had never been smashed in the face with a cream pie before but it was pretty fun... lucky my head is shaved cause I bet Searlsy hair stinks like whipcream still to this day..haha.

We also rode some sweet trails up on the goldy. Got some sweet footage and had a great time. Thanks heaps to the unit crew for making the trip happen. I had a great time. Since I've been back I have been digging like crazy. The jumps are getting there slowly. The drainage's are all done and tidy and looking good. The only big job left is to move the 3rd take off..I'm mixing up the hip this year to add some flavor, but its a big ol lip to move so it's taken me awhile.. check out the pics of the progress of the yard.

Hey guys, here is another update seeing as now I'm back in Australia and back hard in the shovelling business..

I have been back in Australia for the past 3 days and have spent most of my time in the 36 degree heat (98 f) digging on the yard.

Over the past 6 months the jumps have got a floggin. All of the runups are eroded and clapped out so its gonna take a lot of time and effort to get the yard back to good condition.

But within the next 4 weeks she should be back up and running. It's a lot of work when doing it all solo.. but the end result is well worth it.

Speaking of which, I'm a head back out and keep at it.. the jumps aren't gonna dig em selves...see pic for the trick set slowly getting done.

2009 recap with a Tribe guy

Mongoose Tribe member Shawn Metcalf sent me an email with his end of season recap and some pics. I thought it was a great snap shot into one of our brothers in dirt and his love of racing downhill. Thanks for a great season Shawn…hope to catch up with you at Ray’s in the off season.

Well, it's over man. Just like that. It doesn't seem quite right or at least I'm not ready for it to be over. I want the endless summer of racing. I guess that's what Ray's is for. To get my fix throughout the winter. And, from the pictures I've seen of Ray's, it is going to be a blast.

“I’m seeing maintenance in your off season future”

2009 was a fantastic season of Downhilling. It started off a little slow and off kilter for me. Rehabbing my elbow, after I shattered it at the end of 2008, really through a wrench into the mix for me. But, I never gave up and continued to press on.

Below is a compilation of my race results for 2009:
Gravity East #1 at Massanutten Ski Resort: DH-10th
U.S. Open: Downhill-32nd; Giant Slalom-8th
Gravity East #3 at SevenSprings Ski Resort: DH-6th
Snowshoe #1: 3rd
Snowshoe #2: 1st
Snowshoe #3: 2nd
Snowshoe #4: 2nd
I ended up 2nd overall in the series at Snowshoe. Not too bad.

I was hoping to throw some more Gravity East races in there, but my wife had other plans for me. This year was definitely another great one for me. I met some new friends. Downhilling friends are friends forever. But, these guys are the best guys.
The year was filled with great memories. From air mattress packed hotel rooms, a wife in labor, NASCAR style pit crew working on my bike, and all the other ups and downs of downhill racing.

I just want to thank you for the support that you gave me this year. It was a tremendous help and I appreciate it dearly.

I was able to recruit a couple more friends into the world of downhilling and got them riding Mongoose's too. One is on a Black Diamond and the other an ECD. They are loving it and thanking me for getting them into the sport. I say, "the more the merrier".

So a little while back one of the long standing Mongoose product guys Greg Blake went about customizing his cross country rig to stand out a bit at a 24 hour race. Here it is along with a few questions for Greg from Darren another Mongoose product guy.

Darren: So Greg, how long have you been working with Mongoose?
Greg: 18 years, I started out in NY working for Service Cycle after my shop rat days. Benn through 4 states, 5 owners, and hundreds of coworkers.

Darren: That’s awesome, what is the funniest experience you’ve had so far with the brand?
Greg: Well, this is dangerous territory, but a certain “buyer” at a large retailer was questioning our logo once “Maurice the Mongoose”, and it was eerie, as I realized; He thought we “made up” the word “Mongoose”. He had no idea there was such a critter or that it could kill a snake or anything. I sat there and educated him on the meaning of the word, the origin of the company, 1974 yada yada yada, and it was so hard not to laugh (or cry) in his face the whole time. (yes the guy is no longer in the industry)

Darren: Best experience?
Greg I would have to say racing the grass roots MTB team when we first moved to Chicago. It was the closest I have ever become with coworkers, where we spent 12 weekends or more a year driving, camping and racing together. There were about 14 of us, and we were definitely a family..

Darren: So what is it with you and cows? This isn’t the first time you’ve embraced the bovine. What was the van all about?
Greg: When I originally moved to Wisconsin, I thought the obsession with cheese, beer and dairy farming were kind of funny. So that always stuck in my head. A few years ago I was doing a charity ride for heart disease called the “Dave Brown Beer and Cheese tour of Wisconsin”. (different theme each year) I had offered my van as a SAG vehicle for the ride. They usually tie a blow up animal or something to the roofs of the vehicles so as we ride, we can easily identify them. Looking at the stark whiteness of the van, I came up with the idea that it could look cool as a cow, so off to the sign shop I went and bought a few dozen yards of black and white contact decal. I drove it around like that for about a year. It was pretty entertaining to see the reactions on peoples faces.

Darren: How long did it take you to cut all of the decals out
Greg: ? Not long, about 4 hours of intense scissor manipulation and decal bubble popping. Once you pull off the backing paper, the decals were really soft and got a lot of air bubbles behind them, so you pop the bubbles with an X-acto knife, and purge the air with a squeegee.

Darren: How did the 24 hour race go and what was people’s reaction to the customized Goose?
Greg: I got a lot of hollering and thunbs up and several “Mooooooo”s as I went by. The support crew definitely got to know me, and would call me the “Cow man” or “Cow guy” as I went by.

My good friend Jeremiah and I entered the Duo category, and we won. By 11 PM we were 3 laps ahead of the other team, and by 1 AM they hung it up. Around 7 AM when I checked, we were 6 laps ahead, so we took it easy, nothing left to prove. I was quite proud of our lap times, we were rivaling the fastest teams, so it was a good year.

Mongoose Tribe Represents at Attitash

This past weekend Team Voncooper was at Attitash , NH , for the 6th round of the GES. Attitash is a great place to ride. It is full of tight technical trails that always keep you guessing when the next "pinky smashing" tree will pop out of nowhere.

The race track was really fun, one of the best of the season. It was very right and had a lot going on, but it was very easy to find the flow of the trail. I know everyone there had a great time riding it. There was a great turnout of 150 riders. All the men's classes were packed full of fast riders. Even in Cat 3 you had to have a great run to get on the box.

Team Voncooper would like to give a big thanks to DHD Promotions for putting on these races. Without Dan and Team Drop, racing would not be where it is on the east coast. Thank you Dan!

Hunter has been struggling this season, but is slowly figuring it out. Way to go Hunter!

Willem Cooper, 8th. Willem Stepped down from racing pro to concentrate on the team and just having fun on the bike. He was very impressed with the competiveness of Cat 1 and really looks forward to pinning it!

Kyle Karpuska, 15th. Kyle was having a blast all weekend, but was unable to pull together the result he was looking for. Keep and eye out for this kid.

Greg Zlotnick, 6th. Greg is a Moto boy who just understands how to ride a bike. This is Greg's first season racing bikes. This being his best result yet, I know he is hungry for more!

Dustin Foudray, 2nd. Dustin actually tried this weekend and it paid off! This may be his last race on the east coast for the summer, as he is heading to Colorado very soon.

This past week has been OK. I got back from Australia and got straight back into the riding! The yard was running dialed and weather was perfect except for it being heaps hot. Chuck Fallon (Team Manager) came into town and hung out for a few days and we took some photos and video for Mongoose and got into some tasty sodas including some free ones from the casino! Dialed! After throwing down solid for a few days my back started to play up a bit so it ended the sessions. Since then I have been going in to visit Tim at Tim Soders Physical Therapy and getting work done. My back is slowly getting better and today was the first day I have rode since last weekend. The next stop on my list is Portland Dew Tour. I can't wait for that comp and hope I'm back to 100% by then! Cheers, Cam

Mongoose Tribe Represents at Plattekill Mountain

Team Voncooper was at Plattekill Mountain for the third race of the their series. The weekend’s track was a lot of fun. It was full of classic “Platty” style riding. It has some steep woods sections and a surprising amount of flow to it. Delta House Racing took a lot of time putting this track together and it showed. As PJ said “It’s a man’s track”. It was a fast and hard track to ride at race speeds.

Kyle Karpuska took the Win in the Pro Dual Slalom race. Willem Cooper qualified right behind Kyle, but was pumped out in the first round.

Big Mountain Invitational Comp

I just got back from Chatel France from the Big Mountain Invitational Comp "Chatel Mountain Style". I ended up squeaking onto the podium with my Mongoose Boot'r. Pretty sweet for not competing in three years! Just thought I would give everyone a heads up. Furthermore fellow Canadian shredder Garret Buehler managed to snipe a 7th place on his Mongoose Pinn'r.

I also grabbed this shot on the trails at Chatel after the Comp. I’m back home and filming for STUND Visions 2!

Cory Gwin is one of our great Mongoose ambassadors and local source for test riding for product development. He's been in Colorado at the Breck Epic for the past week. Read what he has to say, and check out his videos from the week's events.

Breck Epic is a week long mountain bike stage race in the Colorado Rockies. Every stage leave Breckenridge and features the areas best trails.

The riding has all been cross country and ranges from hard mountain climbs, fast flowy descents and really technical downhills. I have not really seen anything remotely flat.

The race is made up of 6 stages. Day 1 was a prologue time trial mountain climb.

Day 2 a 41 mile day on the Colorado trail with over 6000 feet of climbing.

Day 3 a 30 mile day with around 5000 feet of climbing.

Day 4 44 miles with over 7000 feet climbing, and day 5 40 miles with over 6000 feet of climbing.

Day 6 was 33 miles with 4000 feet climbing.

What am I doing there? I am racing my bike, well trying to anyways! Racing at this high of elevation is brutal. I found out any time I go over 12000 feet my day is over!

Dig it--Mongoose Helps Build Local Bike Park

Mongoose Bikes, Schaefer Tracks and the City of Stoughton,WI have teamed up to build an all inclusive bike park to serve the greater Madsion, WI area. Located on the south side of Stoughton in an area called the Mel Bakke Bike Park the facility has been 3 years in the making. Originally the City had allocated the land for bikes because BMX riders were riding the local skateboard park.

The first portion of construction began in 2007 and involved pouring a concrete slab and building a series of wood ramps. Adjacent to the ramps sat roughly 2 acres of open dirt area which was never developed until recently when Mongoose and Schaefer Tracks teamed up to aid the City in the building of proper dirt jumps, a pump track and a skills park using 400+ cubic yards of dirt.
The bike park is not fully completed, but well underway and should be done this summer. The design is meant to have something for BMX and MTB at all skill levels making it a true bike park and not just a BMX park.

The City of Stoughton has run out of funding for the bike park and all the work provided by Mongoose Bikes and Schaefer Tracks was pro-bono with the aid of local volunteers. Much more is needed to make the bike park the best it can be as well as maintain it into the future.
Anyone interested in making a contribution of money or materials should contact Brian Baldis at baldis44@yahoo.com. More work dates will be arranged in the near future to complete the pump track and skills area. Signs will posted on the park gate with work dates and times as well as on the bike park portion of the City of Stoughton web page.

Directions from Madison: Take 51 south off the Beltline to Stoughton. Turn right on Page st. Go a couple blocks and look for a park on the right after a 4 way stop.

This past week or so has been pretty sweet. We have been riding every morning, dropping in around 7am trying to beat the heat but more importantly the wind. The weather has been weird lately and when I say weird I mean there has been little to no wind, so we have been riding a lot.
The yard is running dialed and Dane Searls is here again from Australia so we have been sessioning pretty hard. It sucks Lavs still isn't back from Thailand, but when he gets home the crew will be back to built up numbers and the sessions will be off the hook.

I built a new bike last week, retired my old bike, so I'm running all brand new parts with the new Legion frame. It’s dialed as. check out the pics.....

Headed to Nyquist's contest at the end of the month with Searlsy, Slayer and Nate B, should be a fun trip and I'm looking forward to that comp. Speaking of which, I'm gonna go cut some laps before the wind gets up. Word. - Cam

Barred for Life Premiere

This Friday I held a premiere of the latest mountain bike film "Barred for Life". The showing was downtown Kelowna - my hometown. Over 300 people showed up to take in the festivities and enjoy the world class movie. The local bike shops also contributed by bringing in bike displays and apparel. Mongoose had front row with my own Boot'R and Nugget bikes sitting at the main entrance. This movie had people saying it was the best release since the "Collective" almost five years ago. Several times I had heard people say the comment "Bike Porn". This must be new lingo. Fellow Mongoose Pinn'R Garett Buehler made the drive down as well as other pro athletes Mike Kinrade and James Dorfling. The movie had the crowd yelling and air horns firing! After the showing the real party began as I celebrated the completion of my section and receiving
opening intro and segment to the movie on board my Mongoose Boot'R. Make sure you get your hands on a copy of "Barred for Life"! You will not be disappointed! This shots backstage explain the aftermath!

JJ Palmere's New Bike

Mongoose Tribe Fontana Race Report

East Coast Tribe Chief Willem has been spending the winter in SoCal with our brothers from other mothers, Team GT. Willem has been working on improving both is riding as well as his video edits. Here's what he had to say about Fontana #4:

Hello fellow Goose Poopers:

This week the Mongoose Tribe and Team Voncooper are coming to you from the 4th round of the Fontana Winter Series. This weekend’s track was really fun and mellow. I was happy with the track as I dislocated my collar bone the week before riding at Lake Elsinore .

I hiked up and took only one practice run in the early afternoon. After our former Mongoose pro Eric Carter was done kicking butt on the 4x, I took a run with him. One of my best friends and fellow Tribe member Jake Baxter came out to the West Coast for a little riding and to just get out of the poor weather New England is notorious for this time of year. He also agreed that the track was very easy and mellow, but fast and fun! Being excited to be on the bike; Jake rode a little too much Saturday and was really tired by the end of the day.

After practice Jake and I cleaned our bikes and headed home to get dinner and some sleep. Sunday morning is always rough for me, especially when we have to get up at 6am to be at Fontana by 8. We got a little bit of rain the night before so the track was even better. I wouldn’t even call it rain – more like a heavy mist. Jake and I hiked up to take a practice run and then just got ready to pinn it.

Finally, it was time to race. I felt that I had strong and fast lines, but I knew that I was riding hurt. I decided to just play it safe in the rocks even if I crashed and pedal my butt of on the wall. Everything came together really well for my race run. I was confident and calm. I hit almost all my lines and made only one mistake in the G-OUT hole. When I got to the bottom rock garden, I heard someone yell, “CATCH HIM”! So I started to pedal and when I came around the bend in the wall I could see the rider that went off before me. That made me pedal even faster! I almost caught up to him.

Overall, I was really happy with my run. I did what I wanted to do; put together a clean and smooth run. I was very happy with my performance on the wall and with getting 15th place in Pro. That wall will get out every time. As for Jake’s race run, he told me that he had a smooth top half but blew his foot off the pedal in the lower rock garden, and that he struggled with the wall. Jake wasn’t concerned with doing well in the race; he was just excited to be in Cal racing and riding.

Josh Button Nationals Race Report

Just got this email from Josh Button, who is currently leading the Australian National DH Series. It's his race report from the National Championships. Enjoy.

2009 Australian Mountain bike Championship, Mt Stromlo Canberra.

In its third year running Mt Stromlo has been the venue for the Aussie National Champs. The track has changed heaps over the years and it is slowly getting better and better. I arrived into Canberra on the Thursday before the race. The boys and I went for a little pedal on the XC course to get our legs spinning, becasue there is one thing that this couse doesn't lack; pedalling.

Practice started early Friday and when I arrived at the venue I was greeted with a big bag full of goodies from Fox gear and Mongoose. Young Troy and I got our new 09 Mongose jersesys and Fox hooked us up with a couple of pairs of fresh pants, some new gloves and heaps of casual wear to rep around the streets. The kits came out looking so sick, they are really bright so they stand out and come up much better in photos.I did a few runs with Broso on Friday, we caught up on things and had a ball. I was stoked to see Mick Hannah come out for this event, I got to hang out with Mick in France mid 2007. He is the nicest bloke ever and such a sick rider. Mongoose definelty chose a great rider package.

I decided to race 4X at this event also, so late friday arvo I went up for a few laps. It was so windy and you could hardly even roll the course without being blown off. It was no fun at all so I pulled the pin early.Friday night we meet up with all my mates and the parents at the Kingo pub. $10 Chicken Schnity and a fire engine went down a treat.

Saturday morning we had split category practice. Elite practice didn't start until 2pm so we decided to go to the rope swing into the Canberra river. We sessioned that for a couple of hours followed by some burnouts in Will's hire van and off we went to practice.

It was boiling out there, the wind was pretty bad aswell, it made all the jumps real scary. I did about 3 runs and had a few goes at the rock garden. Heaps more lines have opened up now so you just have to ride them all to see what suits you. I was riding pretty good and feeling fit.Later that arvo we had 4X. I quickly got some practice laps in but I wasn't riding too good. I just wanted to stay on the DH bike. Anyway I proceeded to the heats. My first heat was hard. The three BMX'ers dropped me out of the gate, I caught them in the first turn but they had a bit of a tangle on the inside so I went outside. As everyone knows outside on the first turn is way slower and although they tangled they still dropped me to the finish line.Second heat was just as tough. I managed to get a good gate and rode alright to the finish pulling off a third.Third heat was a disgrace, I got a good gate and was holding second. Coming up to the big jump on the second straight, old mate goes inside and trys to put me into the barrier, we tangled a bit, I lost all my speed for the jump and he got me. I kept going and tryed to get him on the next off camber inside turn, I came in hot, burried the front wheel and went over the bars! I got up and everyone was way ahead. Had a laugh at myself and kept going, I threw down some style for the crowd and my night was done, no quarter finals for me.

Australia day morning we had seeding for downhill. I walked the bottom of the track and checked out this double line which I haven't heard of or seen anyone do before. You came in over some switch backed whoops, into a little off camber left hander and into the booter. I felt really good riding into that section so I thought I would have a go at doubling of this bump and using the second hump as a landing. Practice started and I came down the hill and prepared for the gap. First run in I hit the whoops sick, came into the little left hander off tap, front wheel slid out and I was on the deck. haha good start.

I pushed back up in the 35 degree heat and had another go. Got the whoops good, set up for the left hander, threw in a crank and sort of half commited, I front wheel cased it, forks bottomed out hard! but the 09 boxxers wanted more. I Decided to push back up and have one more go. Got the whoops sick, slid out a bit on the left turn, one crank and boosted, I nosed in, came up a bit short and did the slight front-to-rear wheel case out. The Boot'R loved it though. After that I called it quits for that line and decided to keep rolling over it.

Seeding came and I decided to have a bit of a dig. I did the top bit really smooth, but I came into the rock section a bit hot, somehow I managed to stay on. I rode the rest good and had a bit of a pedal at the bottom. I ended up seeding in 9th place which I was happy with considering how many good riders were here. Mick seeded into first which was rad.Sunday night a big juicy steak and some fresh vegies was awesome, thanks to Lyn Lavis and the family for having me. We went and checked out the Australia day live festival for a bit which was cool.

Monday morning I was prep'd and ready to go. My dad rocked up that morning and suprised me which was awesome.

Troy Broso had his race early. He had a good run but cased the last jump hard which put him in 3rd by .3 of a second. 3rd is still awesome in the U/17's div. When Broso grows some legs those kids better watchout. I did two practice runs in the morning, both of which I crashed in the same turn. The track was so dry and skatey. A few hours to chill and have a bit of a nap and it was time for finals.Halfway through Elite men finals the wind started blowing. Reports came through that it was a head wind for the final sprint which made everyone really happy haha.

It was time and I was in the gate, a good start and a nice top section. I pinned the top rock garden and heild my speed good. I got a bit sketchy off the big drop and lost some momentum. Coming down to the corner I crashed on that morning I was really cautious, I hit it heaps slower, maybe too slow but I didn't want to lose it again. I sprinted the bottom pedal fighting the head wind, cased the last jump a bit and came over the line with a 2:57.10. A second slower than my seeding time, but the track was way more blown out.

The top seeded riders came down and in the end I finished up in 9th. I was a bit annoyed not to better my seeding time but to be pretty close to some of the really strong riders was good. Mick took the win which was so good. Two Mongoose Boot'R's in the top ten yeww.

Romo the Movie Star

This one may have been up for a while, but Romo is going to be representing the 'Goose big time on the small screen this year. We got this teaser for Rockstar's "Barred For Life" video.

Bjorn sent me some stills from the filming and all I can say is wow. I wish I could rip it like that.

Mongoose at Fontana

Our man with the plan out East, Willem Cooper, decided to head out to SoCal this winter to keep himself in race shape.

After a gruelling one month road trip to get there from RI, Willem is rocking it on his Mongoose Boot'R Team at the South Ridge Racing Fontana series. Not only is Willem racing, but he's putting together some sick videos as well.

Temperature Update

Had Dorel been aware of potential like this, I bet we would be celebrating our 1 year anniversary of them buying Cannondale this month instead of next.

Mongoose Down Under

Mongoose riders were frequent visitors to the podium at Australian National Championships this past weekend.

In downhill Mick Hannah made his return debut to the mountain biking world after taking the 2008 season off. Well let's just say that some well needed rest sprinkled with a little hard work and determination can pay big dividends in results! Mick Hannah is Australia's new, 2009 National DH Champion!

Mick piloted his Boot’R Team beating out some of the biggest competitors on the Australian and the World's DH circuit. This is Mick’s last hurrah on Mongoose and we wish him all the best as he moves onto his new ride with team GT.

Also in the elite downhill new sensation Josh Button nailed a top ten edging out Sam Hill for 9th. Josh is still holding onto the number one plate leading the competitive Australian series. Also of note Troy Brosnan claimed silver in the under 17 group missing the top spot by only .02 seconds. Nice work ya pinners!

The XC crew had ripping good results as well. The course took its toll but team Mongoose Australia prevailed great. All riders were negotiating the demanding Mt. Stromlo course on their Meteore Team frames featuring super light but tough G7 aluminum.

Result highlights from the weekend:

The clear standout result from the weekends racing for Mongoose was Ben taking the silver medal in the crack elite field. After a solid start, Ben moved into 2nd place on the 4th of 5 laps, and held off all challenges to stand on the box!!

In the same race, Shaun Lewis suffered a flat tyre mid first lap, which saw him drop from the top ten to around 25th. He eventually finished 14th.

Rebecca Henderson won the Under 19 women’s title for the 2nd year in succession. Bec recovered well after a spectacular crash on hammer head, which made the news coverage, to finish strongly and earn a place at the World Championships later this year.

Brendan Johnston, who had a high speed crash early in his race, fought back well from 6th place to grab 2nd and put himself right in contention for a World Championship start later this year. Brendan was another victim to the slippery Stromlo surface, sliding out on one of the fastest sections of the course and loosing lots of skin from his right side.

We Get Bored in the Winter

Here's a fun fact... most of today was actually in double digits. Amazing. I actually drove on real asphalt on the way home today.

Here's another fun fact...when we get stuck inside, we look for ways to be creative so that when we can get back outside again, we can capitalize on it and have some fun. Sometimes it's a new T-shirt design (usually inappropriate of course) and sometimes it's an event like the one we are planning at Ray's MTB in March. Although technically that is an indoor event too.

I have to say, Darren comes up with some incredible cold weather ideas. His latest is pretty sweet. I'm sure it has been done before, but I can type this with the confidence that I'm going to have a fleet of them next winter.

Can anyone identify the fork on that bad boy? To steal a tagline from before my time, it's like we put the "M" in Cannondale.

A Spot of Warmth

For the readers that live in the Midwest, this isn't exactly breaking news, but for anyone else out there, it's cold here in Madison this week. I mean IT IS COLD! In the words of one of the execs, "It's colder than a well-digger's ass". I don't even know what that means, but I'm sure it is still an understatement. -23 degrees is cold. Period.

However, we did have something show up today that cast a little bit of warmth on the Mongoose crew. Darren got a "care package" today from our friends in the "We break stuff" office (aka R&D Test Lab) in CO.

Check out the prototype Ti derailleur hangers for Boot'Rs, Pinn'Rs and Nuggets. Talk about sexy time! Like the new 'Geese weren't tough enough already, we're looking to add these. Stronger rear end with virtually no weight penalty.

We're just starting the testing, but if all goes well we'll have these on 2010 as an OE spec and we'll offer them as aftermarket for this year's (2009) bikes.

It has officially become an epidemic. The 2009 Mongoose Pinn'R may be the most highly sought after bike in the lineup. Quite honestly, I have never seen this many bikes of the same type "re-allocated" like this...ever.

First there was the Pinn'r Foreman that was stolen from NSMB.com. That one was recovered after spending some time under a crack addict.

Then we had the Pinn'R Apprentice stolen from our booth at Interbike. That one was recovered by a security guard. Here's my free advice for the day. When displaying bikes, ALWAYS remove the pedals and lock it down like Kanye's love. The story I heard was that someone was too lazy to walk to the front of the trade show hall so they borrowed the Pinn'R to ride it to the exit.

EC's Fontana Race Report

Eric Carter, Mongoose's eternally youthful and competitive mountain biking legend was back in action last weekend at the Fontana Winter Series. He was kind enough to put together a race report and some shots of his race winning rig. DAMN IT!!! I spoiled it for you. Oh well. Go ahead and give it a read anyways. EC, always integral to our R&D process, even managed to pull off the win while testing out a prototype shock mount. In his words:

"This past weekend was the 1st of the 6 race Fontana winter series, with strong Santa Ana winds forecasted the challenge would not only be against the other racers but the wind itself.

The weekends usually start off with DH practice but a giant turn out and some gate problems for the 4x made it only possible to get 4x practice and then the race in with no DH practice runs on Saturday.

The 4x went well, we had 3 groups of pros which meant there would be semi finals…I like it when more riders show up as we get more race runs in, I had good starts despite the cross winds blowing riders off the gate and won my two heats up to the final. In the final Jake Kinney and Blake Carney would be the main comp, I expected Blake in lane 1 to get the hole shot as he is an avid BMXer and finished 2nd at last years 4x national championships, but Jake Kinney in lane 2 got a nice start and forced me to push hard to be over to get over from lane 3, I led the pack into the first turn and never looked back taking my first win of the new season.

I woke up early Sunday morning to be able to get to the course for some good practice runs for the DH, this weekend I choose to use a prototype Khyber with an adjustable shock mount that we have been testing to try different linkage ratios…..I ran it in the middle position and the bike had a nice feel to it….I felt decent on the course but not dialed like normal…my goal was to make smooth turns on top with minimal mistakes and then hammer the infamous wall section of Fontana, the plan went out the window on the first turn with a bobble causing me to clip out of my pedals and scramble a bit, I took the next two turns slow to regain composure and then attacked the rest of the course, I felt like I still had a bit left in the tanks and hammered the wall, I thought I had a decent run but didn’t think it would be enough for the top spot, results posted and I was pumped to see I had got the win by 4 seconds, this was the first time I had raced the Khyber at Fontana. I wish I had used it more in the past as it was the perfect amount of travel and at 31 lbs, pedaled awesome on the wall. This is the same bike I have been doing all of my all mountain XC rides In our local southern California mountains and took the win in a Super D race the weekend before out at Vail Lake.

Now the focus is keeping the points leads in both classes out at Fontana while building fitness for the upcoming season."

So, to summarize: EC took the win in the 4x with minimal practice in a cross wind. Then he took the win in the DH...with virtually no practice...on a 6.5" All Mountain bike...that was technically a one-off prototype. Jesus this guy is good. OK, OK, OK, I know this is what you were really looking for so here's the pics of his ride. Note that EC is a SRAM sponsored rider so you'll see a lot of their goodies on the bike. Last time I saw his bike it had some BlackBox bits on it but I couldn't tell from these shots if he's running any of those this time.

Sneakin' a Peekin'

There were a couple of reasons that we wanted to open up the 'Pooper (Frickin' GREAT nickname, Cho, thanks!). This post is one of them.

One of the cool parts of my job is being privy to some of the new prototype stuff that rolls through the office. I work pretty closely with the product development guys (Darren and Brian) so they keep me abreast of anything coming down the pipeline so I can get the wheels in motion on figuring out how to promote it. This week I got to see one of the coolest protos since I have been here.

Protecting the Junk

So I thought I was challenged on the IBD side of the business. Look at what the mass market side of Mongoose has to deal with:

This little piece of design genius was provided by one of our factories. It's supposed to be a top tube pad for a BMX bike. In the words of one of my co-workers, "It looks like a used...(you can imagine what went here)!"

Explain to me what parent is going to buy a bike with this on the top tube...at Wal-Mart. The thing is, the form is bad enough on its own. The graphics just take it to a whole new level of inappropriateness. And that's coming from ME! Was someone over there in a hurry to get this done before Chinese New Year or something?

It actually could have been worse. What if, in an attempt to cater to the school-age kids, they designed the graphics to look like a ruler? I'm envisioing that defining moment in the kid's life where he's sitting on the bike in the store, all kinds of excited about his new bike. This bike is just a little bit too big for him, but the parents, trying to be forward-thinking and minimizing the number of bikes they will have to buy for their boy actually bust out the line, "Well, Steve, he'll grow into it."

That's the kind of story that comes up around a campfire when you are in your 20's after a couple of cocktails. Or in a shrink's office in your 50's after your 3rd divorce. "I always felt like I had huge expectations to live up to..."

The funny thing is, this probably isn't that big of a deal. I'm just jealous of my co-workers who are in vegas at CES showing off the new Schwinn Tailwind.

Cam Jam 2009

ALL proceeds benefit the Children's Hospital Foundations and the Stephen Murray Fund. You heard it here first (or maybe second) there's going to be dirt jumping, a live band, cash and prizes...what else could you possibly ask for?

A Sausage Sizzle? CHECK! Nando's Chicken? You Bet! But be aware, no booze, hooch, moonshine or whatever you call it in your neck of the woods is allowed.

So in the winter time here at Home in Nelson BC, we tend to get a fair amount of snow. This usually keeps me off the bike for the months of November threw to March. I tend to do a lot of skiing and snowboarding in during this time but my plans have been changed due to the lack of deep snow and the desire to travel over seas somewhere warm.

Jan 20th, I'll be heading to Thailand for just over a month, and it was either a ski pass or a rad little adventure. I choose the adventure, don't get me wrong, I will find the time for a few days of the steep and deep before I leave but I have found something else to keep me busy for these snowy months before my departure around the world.

Luckily this winter I'm fortunate enough to have a super sick bmx thanks to Mongoose, and luckily Nelson has a pretty rad little indoor park. Its been super rad going down there and learning how to ride these little bikes, it was weird at first but I think I'm doing pretty decent for someone who usually sticks to shredding his Downhill bike. We got a rad little crew in Nelson that comes out to the park and gits er dun! Check out this vid...

Cam White Dials The Yard

So this past weekend change has been pretty full on. After a big Christmas here at home with family, I went on holiday up north with my girlfriend Michelle and my mates Rob and Megan. We all went to unwind, relax, and of course, celebrate the New Year. We spent the week out on the boat fishing and inside playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It was definitely a lot of fun and now that I’m home, it’s time to get back into it.

The yard is absolutely thrashed. My mate Little Chris and I have been digging like crazy for the past two months. We finally got the yard up and running and more dialed than ever before. But a week and two days ago—I remember the exact day—we had a nice rage of storms come through, and seeing as though my jumps are on the side of the hill, they got absolutely smashed. So while I was on holiday, Chris was out there digging the whole time and got a lot done, but to get them ready for the Jam we have a lot more to do.

Don’t worry, though, it’s going to be off the chart soon enough. We even added a bit more to the yard to mix it up. Not a whole lot, but definitely a lot of fun. Stay tuned for next update as January is a busy month!!!!!

So...we just had a classic Canadian Winter Storm last night..some area's got 20cm's of snow while some areas just got 2-3cm's.

It's so cold outside that, when I tried to open the door to my truck today..it wouldn't open! So I had to get some hot water to spray on my truck..so that solved the frozen door issue, but it turns out that the latch was frozen too, so after i opened my door the latch wouldn't hold the door shut..so..more hot water saves the day!

Today we had a high of -3 degrees celcius i think..its supposed to get even colder by Wednesday!

Lucky for me I managed to fit in a few rides before the snow!

All this cold weather left me sitting on my laptop looking back to this summer, and how much fun it was..so I'll do my best to share with you guys some of the cool stuff over the next little while.

Whistler in the Winter

Well since this is my first post on the pooper, let's catch you up on my life. Its been about a month since its been getting COLD and Whistler even decided to open its doors to the world!..for winter that is. So I went up with the red bull crew to hang out! the truck you see there has 3 lcd screens that raise out of the roof as well as a DJ booth out the back. Her name's 'sugga'. [suu-gaa] German for a 'wandering' girlfriend.

I also happen to attend university in the off season..and many of you will know that it's time for finals...its safe to say that there's more caffeine in my body than recommended..

On a brighter note, I'll be done by the end of this weekend and I'll be able to get out for a ride!

I don't know why more people aren't this passionate about Mongoose.

A few months back I got a request for a big banner from a guy who just got a new 'Goose frame through warranty. I was happy that he was so pumped about getting the new frame so I sent him the banner. We get banner requests all the time so I didn't think anything of it...till I opened my email today.

Not only did he glue, did you hear me? GLUE (NOT A TYPO) the banner to his car, he custom cut it to work around the doors and seams. Spectacular.

My name isn't Kelly or Edmunds, but I'm pretty sure he just upped the resale value of his car. I hear he gets an extra 7 mpg as well. The only thing that might slow him down is that questionable Transition Bikes sticker.

Eatin' It After Thanksgiving

So our Mongoose Brogram guy Kyle Noble in FL apparently overdid it on tryptophan over the Thanksgiving weekend.

A bad session on Saturday left him with about 40 stitches and minus 4 teeth. Dentist got his grill put back together Sunday morning.

First and foremost we wish him a speedy recovery, but on a side note, I am awarding him "Best Geico Caveman Imitation".

In Kyle's words: "I know it happened in the mini-ramp. Beyond that I don’t remember much."

Kyle is tough...period.

Behind the Scenes in Taiwan

Our Product Managers Daren and Brian are back this week after being in Taiwan the past two weeks. The boys were over there to visit vendors, get their fingers all over the new lineup and discuss whats in store for 2010.

The trip started off with Darren checking out the 2009 Teocalis that are in production.

Here's a shot of someone's kick-ass trail bike-to-be being welded by hand. Our vendors pay really close attention to detail and their work is outstanding.

As you can see, Darren was OK with this batch.

The highlight of the trip (for the crew that goes) is the Noodle Mountain ride. The Noodle Mountain Ride is out of Taichung with a bunch of people mostly from the bike biz up some pretty steep inclines to get to this cabin and restaurant owned by a retired professor.

The price is right, the view is incredible, and the noodles are WELL worth the effort. In the words of our saddle vendor after receiving her small order, "Ah, the heck with it, fill this bowl up the rest of the way!"

After noodles and humor (You really can't have one without the other) it's time to head back down. The roads are sketchy with tons of hairpin turns on REALLY narrow roads. It’s like the excitement of mountain biking only on pavement (kind of). The ride back down gets pretty rowdy if you’re willing to hang it out on the turns.

Aside from the Noodle Mountain Ride, Darren likes to spot Scooter Haiku. Apparently this is huge over there. (Is that an oxymoron?) Here's some of our favorites:

Brand Planning and Mongoose Boozing

Just got out of a MARATHON brand analysis meeting. Based on the feedback, I have PLENTY of work to do to get Mongoose back up to an acceptable level. The good news, we scored higher than GT, Schwinn and Cannondale in a couple of categories. The bad news...let's just say I won't make you read that much.

Fortunately, I made it through the whole thing. It was due in no small part to my yet-to-be-patented anti-hangover concoction. We took the boys from Cannondale out to the Irish pub last night and had a couple of very dark beers. If ever faced with a day of long meetings and a fuzzy head from the night before, here's my suggestion:

Three Advil with a Slim-Fast chaser. The Advil for obvious reasons, but there's something about the vitamins and nutrients in the Slim-Fast that just help you recover. I love that even though I am getting older, I can still throw caution to the wind at the bar because I know there's a cold Slim-Fast waiting for me in the morning.

Why am I so excited about sharing my anti-hangover secret? Because my buddy Pat at Colorado Pure Distilling bottled and shipped my Mongoose Vodka today. Here's the label. I can't wait to tip one back to the 'Goose.

We Kept it Rowdy

This weekend marked the first annual Hillbilly Downhill event put on by Eric Carter at Vailocity Bike Park in Temecula, CA. All I can say is WOW; I'm proud to have been there. Mongoose was the title sponsor, and I think we did a pretty OK job representing if I do say so myself. I only wish my camera didn't pick up every particle of dust floating around. It looks like it was snowing; it wasn't

We had a gaggle of 'Geese available for demos, Sniper had the race rig set up for support, we passed out Mongoose koozies to everyone there and I even busted out a couple of branded wife-beater shirts to keep in the hillbilly spirit.

While there was great XC, Super D and DH racing to be had on both Saturday and Sunday, without a doubt, the highlight of the weekend was the Hillbilly Games that took place on Sat night.

Playing by the light provided by a six foot tall bonfire (courtesy of "Pantera") we played toilet seat horseehoes, bobbed for pig's feet and rolled tires around the track. I seriously haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time.

The toilet seat horseshoes were a riot and I actually felt someone's head hit the concrete during the tire roll, but we knew the bobbing for pig's feet was going to be the main event. It didn't disappoint. Fox Shox donated a couple of forks, and I was amazed at what people were willing to put in their mouths for bike parts. I took a couple of pics, but even these don't serve it justice.

All in all, the event was a blast. The course was great, the facility is a gold mine of potential and there were more people there than some other national events I have attended. Way to go EC! On a personal note, this weekend solidified my theory that may job is actually pretty cool.
